Felting Lessons: Boots!

"These boots are meant for walking!"

Now you can have your own boots made of wool!

Welcome to the magical world of felting. This 1 day workshop will be taught by wool artist Sarah Breggin.

The techniques taught in this class were passed to Sarah from artist Monika Stooss from Switzerland, who pioneered the use of felting for fashion as well as for therapeutic purposes in social pedagogy.

This is a one day workshop focusing on felting techniques for spherical and 3 dimensional shapes.

At the end of the workshop you will have created a beautiful pair of boots, which will be taken to the cobbler to be soled. Please allow a total of approximately 6 weeks to dry thoroughly (at the shop) and soling (at the cobbler). We will give you a call when they are ready to be picked up.

Your boots will be felted directly to your foot and calf size/shape, as the final stages of felting are done with the boot directly on your foot. Do you have narrow feet, wide feet, narrow heel but wide toebox, small calves, large calves, extra large calves, extra wide feet, two feet of different sizes? Your custom boots will fit you no matter what size you are! Then when the boots are soled, the soles will be cut to the shape of your boot, providing custom support and coverage. The cobbler will also starch the back of the ankle area to reduce slouching. Prepare to enjoy the luxury of hand-made, custom fitted wool boots.

The session consists of one (approximately) 10 hour lesson. Please note that this workshop is physically demanding and involves standing, bending, and rubbing for long periods of time.

Class may run later than scheduled. Please plan for the possibility of the class running until 7:00 PM if you want to finish your boots in class. You can leave at any time, but homework may be required to finish your boots.

The 2012 schedule is shown below. Choose a group and sign up!

Check out the results of our first boot class!

Place: Birkeland Bros. Wool

Cost: $375.00 + HST. Materials included, including the cost of cobbling the boots.

Supplies you must bring to class:
- a packed lunch and snacks if desired. There are places to buy food nearby.
- 4 full sized towels (they may get stained)
- 3 plastic bags (grocery bag size or small kitchen bags) to put on your feet, and one for your knee
- If you have sensitivities to soap, please bring latex gloves or equivalent to protect your skin.
- Thick rubber kitchen gloves to protect your hands from hot water (optional)
Please arrive 1/2 hour early for registration.

Please read:

After class is over, you will have the option to bring your boots home if they need extra work (some boots will require more shaping). You must bring your boots back to the shop no later than 1 week after class if you want your boots soled.

Boots will dry in the shop for 4 weeks after class (they must be absolutely dry before being soled). Then they will be taken to the cobbler to be soled, which can take up to 2 weeks.

You will be notified when your boots have been soled and are back in the shop to be picked up (approximately 6 weeks after class).

Boots must be picked up within 4 weeks of being completed and ready for pickup. If they are left in the shop after 4 weeks, they will become property of the shop.
